![]() The death toll for the 26 December earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean near Indonesia stands at 22,000 in up to 10 countries already (as of 27 December), and is likely to double before this disaster, one of the worst in recent history, runs its course. Floods struck as far away as Somalia, on Africa's eastern coast. America has dispatched relief teams, and is preparing a $15 million aid package to start with; Australia has offered $10 million and the European Union has pledged $4 million. USAID fact sheet CIDI situation reports American Red Cross: How to Help Mercy Corps report Save the Children: How to Help Reuters' AlertNet: South Asia Quake and Tsunamis For more, see the Christian Science Monitor's list of relief agencies working in the disaster area. And of course (you must have known this was coming):
The South-East Asia Earthquake and Tsunami Blog UPDATE (28 Dec 04): The death toll now stands at 40,000, bypassing the tsunami caused by the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883. An estimated 36,000 people were killed in that disaster. UPDATE (29 Dec 04): The toll now stands at 77,000 human deaths. Athough this isn't the worst natural disaster in my lifetime -- I believe that "honor" goes to a 1976 earthquake in Tangshan, China in which 242,000 people died -- it's certainly the worst I want to see. |
| skye December 28, 2004 08:33 PM PST My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Indonesia and Malaysia. The US government has pledged 35 million so far in aid, not including food and individual US citizens private donations. Yet...the UN eurosnobs still find a way to blame America. Jan Egeland, a Norwegian UN Relief Coordinator, when sked about the response of rich nations to such crises, he said: "It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really." BTW- to date france has committed @100,000 euros for the earthquake relief. I am shocked and awed they were able ante up that much euro! When asked about france's contribution, Jan replied with "no comment" :)) | ||
| JM December 29, 2004 08:59 AM PST It's unbelievable that some people would use a tragedy like this to bash America... yet they did. Sometimes the mask slips a bit, and the true face of the UN, Europe and Liberalism can be seen. | ||
| S.B April 14, 2005 08:05 PM PDT it is amazing that one wave could detroy all of these lives but the pepole that lived they are more amazing that they could survive these tsunamis also what people might call them the monsters of the ocean. | ||
| joseph stephens April 23, 2005 08:29 PM PDT I am a 13 year old kid from florida and I think it is unbelevible that such a thing could happen to about 150,000 people I wish I could do anything but I don't have that kind of money but if I did it would go to those poor people that dont deserve such a terrible fate. I did'nt think it was so bad but whenIheard of all of those deaths I started to rethink what I thought!!! | ||
