So a group of Republican Senators have decided that getting favorable media attention is more important than preventing the Constitution from being violated by obstructionist Democrats. Not surprisingly, their leader was John McCain , long known as a RINO -- Republicans In Name Only. The Democrats have promised to filibuster judicial nominees only under "extraordinary circumstances" -- vague words that leave the Democrats free to decide what they think may constitute extraordinary circumstances. We all know what that means. Any judge that fails to pass the Liberal Litmus Tests -- promising to uphold abortion on demand and not oppose gay "marriage" -- will be considered "extreme" and filibustered to death. This violates the Constitution, which specifically calls for the "advice and consent" of the Senate for a President's nominees. The Senate gets to vote yes or no on each nominee, not prevent a vote from being taken by using a "house rule" that covers discussion on motions and bills. A President's appointments are not ordinary Senate business like motions or bills! Any Senator who allows appointees to be filibustered is willfully violating the Constitution, and will never get my vote for any office, ever. On a side note: before you Liberals start yelling the talking point du jour, "Abe Fortas," get the facts straight. Both parties delayed Fortas' nomination to Chief Justice for a matter of days while allegations of corruption were being investigated. When it turned out that Fortas would lose even if a vote were taken, LBJ withdrew the nomination. Fortas later stepped down from the bench amid a cloud of ethical violations. If anyone -- Democrat or Republican -- has evidence of corruption or crime committed by any of Bush's nominees, then they should go right ahead and delay the vote while the allegation is being investigated. THAT would be considered an "extraordinary circumstance." Not swearing to advance the Liberal agenda of the party that's out of power is not an "extraordinary circumstance." Yet that's exactly what will happen. When the American people vote a party out of power in the House, the Senate and the White House, it's because their agenda is not wanted. Republicans have gained a majority in every branch of government, including state governorships and legislatures, since 1994. The only branch of government not directly controlled by the people is the judiciary... so the people have voted for those who would appoint and confirm the kind of judges they want. And certain weak-willed Republicans, who are afraid to act as though their party keeps winning because they might not get invited to the best cocktail parties, have surrendered to the losing party without a shot being fired. They continue to thwart the will of the American people, as expressed in election after election, just to gain a few favorable words in the "mainstream" media and a few points in the polls. And frankly, it's disgusting. We all lose by straying from Constitutional principles. There can be no compromise with unconstitutional actions. The elephant in the room that no one's talking about is the next round of Supreme Court nominees. It's no secret that Chief Justice Rehnquist, a strong Conservative and strict Constitutionalist, is suffering from thyroid cancer. When he steps down, as he inevitably will, the Democrats will declare any nominee to the ideological right of Joe Stalin "extreme" and be free to filibuster until the cows come home. The rest of the Supreme Court judges aren't getting any younger, either. How many "extraordinary circumstances" are we going to hear about in the next few years? There have been times and places in which a tiny minority controlled the majority, and it's never been pretty. We recently rectified such a situation in Iraq, where the Ba'ath party, supported by the Sunni minority, kept the majority of the people in virtual slavery. If we allow the minority Democrats to hold a virtual veto over the judiciary, while the judiciary continues to interpret laws and legislate from the bench according to Liberal sensibilities, we might as well stop pretending to live in a Republic where the people have a say in their own government. |

| JM May 23, 2005 09:43 PM PDT Well, yeah, that's what I meant to say. | ||
| skye May 23, 2005 10:24 PM PDT Senator McCain is the Neville Chamberlain of the 21st century. | ||
| William Gary May 23, 2005 11:01 PM PDT Very good point on the Ba'ath party. Democrats don't want minority rights they want majority rights. (cause they already got the minority right which is to be heard) | ||
| Night Wood May 23, 2005 11:37 PM PDT Ive already written my repub senator, as if it will do any good, but at least I got it off my chest. I thanked him for buckling under while in the majority and asked what I have to look forward to were we to be the minority instead. What a @#$&%*#$%@# SHAMEFUL episode this is. | ||
| From Ohio May 24, 2005 04:53 PM PDT Both my senators have let me down. I have made them both aware of the fact that I will no longer be voting for either of them. | ||
| Jamie May 24, 2005 11:15 PM PDT I agree, it was all a political play, so much b-s. I hope that this little ploy backfires on the rinos! I lost all respect for McCain when he played footsie with Kerry during the runup to the election. | ||
| Rob May 25, 2005 01:54 PM PDT There needs to be a "woodshed" session at the Whitehouse between GWB and these recalcitrant RINOs to put them on notice that party discipline is to be enforced and their support of his initiatives (including political appointments) is expected -- or consequences will ensue. There is a LOT a President, the de facto head of the party, can do to put pressure on these grandstanding mavericks, including withholding support for initiatives THEY favor in their home districts and White House/party support in future elections. I'm sure there are qualified CONSERVATIVE alternatives to these jokers, living in their states right now, who would love some major RNC support in upcoming Primary elections the nest time said RINOs are up for re-election! It's time for Carl Rove to flex some of that legendary political "muscle" of his and get these "moderate" media hogs back in line! They are enjoying their posh "majority party" digs as a result of Red State voters propelling them to that status with the expectation that they would support conservative values, including conservative judges and others the President would seek to appoint to important positions (e.g., UN Ambassador). I just can't believe that these cretins are perfectly willing to squander the golden opportunity that has been handed to them by selfishly trying to grab the spotlight and gain favor with the liberal media rather than being "team players" with the Republican party, and its supporters, that helped put them where they are today. John McCain, George Voinovich, Christopher Shays, and Lincoln Chaffee are little better than Jim Jeffords, and in some ways are worse; at least he was honest enough to (eventually) drop all pretense of being a Republican and changed party affiliation to Socialist Worker's Party -- errr, ah, I mean "Independent" voting with the "dirty Demmies"! These guys need a good ass-whipping and GWB, with some "political capital" to burn, is the right guy to give it to them! Just one man's opinion... ;-) | ||
| skye May 25, 2005 06:56 PM PDT Now the Dems trying to delay a Vote on Bolton: http://news.yahoo.com/fc/US/Bush_Administration/ This is actually good news, the dems are going to break this "good faith" agreement. It is only a matter of time when Rehnquist announces he will be stepping down. Watch the filibusters fly! Watch the dems loose more seats in the House and Senate. Bring it On! | ||
| Rob May 25, 2005 07:15 PM PDT Skye, I'm sure you didn't think the libs would "play fair" and keep their promises not to fillibuster except for "extraordinary circumstances"! To them, Teddy Kennedy showing up for work sober or Bill Clinton refraining from sexually preying on vulnerable females are "extraordinary circumstances"! I don't know what it's going to take for "Snow White" (John McCain -- 202-224-2235) and the rest of the Seven Dwarfs: (Mike DeWine (Ohio) 202-224-2315 Susan Collins (Maine) 202-224-2523 Lindsey Graham (SC) 202-224-5972 Lincoln Chaffee (RI) 202-224-2921 John Warner (VA) 202-224-2023 Olympia Snow (Maine) 202-224-5344) to realize that these are NOT honorable people they're dealing with. Of course, I'm not sure how "honorable" some of them are since they've disenfranchised so many of the Republican supporters who propelled them to Senate Majority status with things like this latest sell-out! It's really shameful! | ||
| Rob May 25, 2005 07:20 PM PDT OT here but pertinent in a general sense so I'd like it to get widespread exposure (so I've posted it around some of my favorite blogs! lol): Here's a new blog, launching today, that has a lot of potential (God knows there should be PLENTY of material) -- http://www.rathergate.com/?p=821 It will be a collaborative effort by a number of established "names" in the blogosphere, aimed at exposing and documenting biased and untrue stories about our military and efforts in the War on Terror. I know I'll be checking it out regularly in the days ahead to see how it's going. I anticipate it becoming an excellent resource for those of us who have known for a long time that the MSM are intentionally casting our service members and the Bush Administration in the worst possible light when it comes to the War! I urge all of you to stop by to see what they have to say as well! | ||
| skye May 25, 2005 09:07 PM PDT Rob, Thanks for the link! As for my previous comment. I fully expect the left to break this "good faith" agreement. The libs and RINO's that framed this agreement have boxed themselves into a corner. When ANY dem Senator calls for a filibuster on a Bush Appointee, the agreement will be perceived as broken. Consistent filibustering will only reinforce the perception with the American public. The 2006 mid term elections will not be good for the Dems...good for America...but not for liberals. | ||
| skye May 25, 2005 09:39 PM PDT Cav, I know you are upset with this so called agreement, however, lashing out at Bananarama is uncalled for! Shame on you! | ||
| JM May 26, 2005 09:00 AM PDT Hey, now, no need to drag the entire internet into our personal life... :) | ||
| Paladin May 26, 2005 09:47 PM PDT i think they should just make them filibuster just like strom did. The RIGHT way. Not just say"i'm filibustering so lets move on". And by right i mean stick to talking about the topic not reading the phone book. This would speed things up considerably and that would be a good thing no matter who's in control. | ||
